A seven-day national mourning has been announced to honour former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, government sources said. His last rites will be conducted with full State Honours.
In a statement, the hospital said the Congress veteran was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had “sudden loss of consciousness at home”. “Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9.51pm,” the statement said.
Manmohan Singh was Prime Minister for two terms in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government from 2004 to 2014. He had been in poor health for the last few months.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered his predecessor as the “most distinguished leaders”. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said he “lost a mentor and guide”.
Congress leader KC Venugopal said that the last rites of former PM Manmohan Singh, whose body was brought to his residence from Delhi AIIMS, will be held tomorrow.
Former US President Barack Obama, in his memoir “A Promised Land,” paid tribute to Manmohan Singh’s exceptional leadership, describing him as a “man with uncommon wisdom”. Mr Obama praised Manmohan Singh’s commitment to economic reform, his dedication to the well-being of the Indian people, and his unwavering integrity.
Mr Obama wrote that Manmohan Singh, an eminent economist, had managed to lift millions of people from poverty and that the markings of his Sikh faith made him look “holy” in the eyes of the West. He further added that Manmohan Singh’s tenure as a Prime Minister proved that he was “wise, thoughtful, and scrupulously honest”.
The Congress announced that all party official programmes, including its foundation day celebrations, will be cancelled for the next seven days as a mark of respect for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who died on Thursday. Congress general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala said Congress has cancelled its ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Rally’ in Karnataka’s Belgaum on Friday. Congress general secretary in-charge organisation K C Venugopal said all official party programmes, including its foundation day celebrations, stand cancelled for the next seven days.
