In a major development in West Bengal’s ongoing primary teacher recruitment scam, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against state minister Chandranath Sinha. What makes this development even more significant is the approval from Governor Sukanta Majumdar, who recently took charge of the constitutional post in West Bengal.

This action has intensified the political tension between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The ED’s move comes after a months-long investigation into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment process of primary teachers under the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE).

Background of the Scam

The primary teacher recruitment scam first came to light in 2022 when several aspirants raised serious allegations of corruption, favoritism, and manipulation of merit lists in the recruitment process. The Calcutta High Court ordered a probe into the matter, following which the CBI and ED were brought into the investigation.

Multiple arrests were made, including top officials and former education ministers. The involvement of current ministers like Chandranath Sinha raised questions about the depth of the corruption network.

Governor’s Role

Governor Sukanta Majumdar, who has often criticized the state administration over law and order issues, gave his official consent for prosecution against Chandranath Sinha. This is a constitutional requirement before any legal proceeding can be initiated against a sitting minister. His approval has paved the way for the ED to formally submit the chargesheet in court.

This move is being seen as a political statement as well as a legal step, as Majumdar is known to be aligned with the central government’s ideologies.

Explosive Allegations by Sukanta Majumdar

Governor Majumdar did not hold back in his comments after granting permission. He alleged that systematic corruption in recruitment has robbed thousands of eligible candidates of their rightful jobs. He also accused certain leaders of the ruling party of building a network of favoritism, effectively making recruitment a “cash-for-job” system.

He called for complete transparency and accountability in the recruitment process and expressed his commitment to restoring public trust in the state’s education system.

Political Reactions

The TMC has strongly condemned the move, terming it a politically motivated attack on its leaders. Party spokespersons claimed that the BJP is using central agencies to target opposition voices in Bengal.

However, opposition parties and many civil society groups have welcomed the chargesheet, demanding swift justice and recovery of lost job opportunities for genuine candidates.

The filing of the ED chargesheet against Chandranath Sinha, backed by the Governor’s approval, has added a new dimension to West Bengal’s education scam saga. As legal proceedings begin, the political battlelines are expected to deepen ahead of the upcoming elections.
