Celebrated director Arindam Sil is set to begin filming his latest political thriller, Karpur: Skeleton in the Cupboard. This powerful narrative is inspired by the mysterious 1997 disappearance of Manisha Mukhopadhyay, a former Deputy Controller of Examinations at the University of Calcutta. The story explores themes of corruption, power, and hidden truths from Bengal’s long Left Front regime.
Based on the novel Antardhaner Nepothye by Dipanwita Roy, the film draws from real incidents but presents them with fictionalized names, settings, and characters. The director emphasizes that Karpur is a work of fiction and bears no direct resemblance to any individual or political party.
Set across two time periods—1997 and 2019—the film captures how crimes from the past continue to cast long shadows in the present. Notably, it features 34 actors, with 19 characters set in the modern day. Veteran actress Rituparna Sengupta plays the role inspired by Manisha Mukhopadhyay, portraying a woman caught in a web of institutional corruption.
Political figures have also joined the cast, sparking debates in West Bengal. Education Minister Bratya Basu plays the lead investigative officer, while TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh portrays a party leader in the 1997 storyline. Their involvement has stirred early political controversy even before the cameras start rolling.
The film’s plot delves into how academic corruption, including grade tampering and manipulation of recruitment processes, was allegedly orchestrated during a politically sensitive period. Manisha’s unexplained disappearance, which halted investigations at the time, forms the heart of this cinematic exploration.
With music by Rathijit Bhattacharya and produced by Friends Communication and Kahak Studios, Karpur promises to be a gripping thriller that examines how truth can be hidden—but not forever.
Though based on a true story, the film is carefully crafted to remain within fictional and legal boundaries, ensuring an engaging yet responsible cinematic experience for viewers across India.
