The Matua community, a crucial vote bank in West Bengal politics, has once again become the center of controversy. BJP MLA Subrata Thakur has openly accused Union Minister Shantanu Thakur of misusing the name of the community for political purposes.
The explosive remarks have revealed deep cracks within the BJP’s Matua leadership, sparking unrest just months before the West Bengal Assembly Elections.
The Root of the Dispute
For years, the Matua community has been at the forefront of the debate over citizenship rights and religious identity, especially in the context of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Despite repeated assurances, the CAA is yet to be fully implemented, creating frustration among community members.
Recently, initiatives involving the creation of “Matua cards” and distribution of religious certificates have triggered discontent. Many allege that these efforts, led by organizations under Shantanu Thakur’s influence, are confusing ordinary Matua families. Questions are being raised about who gets these certificates and who is left out, intensifying divisions.
Subrata Thakur’s Strong Words
BJP legislator Subrata Thakur minced no words in his criticism. He alleged:
“Cards are being made in the name of the Matua community, and certificates are being issued. But they serve no real purpose for ordinary people. This is nothing but vote politics.”
According to Subrata, people are being misled with documents while their core demand — citizenship benefits under CAA — remains unfulfilled. He accused Union Minister Shantanu Thakur of exploiting religious sentiments for electoral gains.
Shantanu Thakur’s Camp Responds
Close aides of Shantanu Thakur, however, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. They argued that the measures were introduced to preserve the Matua identity and maintain community unity.
According to them, the purpose of the initiative is cultural and social, not political. “This is about protecting heritage and making sure the next generation is aware of their roots,” they emphasized.
Political Fallout for BJP
The timing of this rift could not be worse for the BJP. In 2021, the Matua vote bank played a significant role in the party’s success in districts like North 24 Parganas, Nadia, and South Bengal. A divided Matua community could severely weaken the BJP’s electoral prospects in 2026.
Political observers believe that the TMC (Trinamool Congress) will try to capitalize on this situation. The ruling party has consistently accused BJP of offering empty promises to the Matuas, pointing to the delay in CAA implementation as proof.
Voices from the Community
Among the Matua community, reactions are mixed. Some feel betrayed, believing BJP has failed to deliver on its promises. Others still hold hope that the central government will eventually fulfill its commitments.
Analysts, however, caution that open dissent from a leader like Subrata Thakur will likely intensify dissatisfaction within the community and could damage BJP’s hold over this influential group.
