West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticized the role of certain District Magistrates (DMs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), and the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) amid ongoing flood crises in multiple districts of South Bengal.
During an administrative meeting in Bolpur on Monday, Mamata Banerjee expressed her frustration over the frequent flooding caused by water release from DVC. She alleged that DVC is releasing excess water into Bengal to protect Jharkhand, resulting in devastating floods in districts like Birbhum and adjacent areas. The Chief Minister said:
“DVC has not carried out dredging for 20 years. If dredging had been done, an additional 4 lakh cusecs of water could be stored.”
She further warned that if DVC continues to neglect dredging, the state government may build a dam in front of DVC’s own structure to stop excess water from flooding Bengal districts.
Sharp Words for District Officials and Police
The Chief Minister didn’t hold back when addressing the performance of district administrations. She pointed out that some DMs and SPs are taking unilateral decisions without consulting the state government.
“This never used to happen before. Why now? This must stop,” Mamata warned.
She also cautioned administrative officers to avoid making public statements that could lead to public mockery or political backlash. According to her, even some political leaders must be more mindful of their words and actions.
IB and Police Under Fire After Political Killings
In the same meeting, Mamata Banerjee raised serious concerns about police and intelligence failure following the killings of two Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders in Birbhum within just seven days. She questioned the state intelligence (IB) and local police for not having any prior information.
“Why didn’t the IB get prior intel? What were the police doing? Are they not responsible?” she asked.
Allegations of BJP-TMC Nexus in Birbhum
The Chief Minister also made a bold claim that some TMC leaders in Birbhum are in political agreement with BJP leaders. She accused them of forming “50-50 compromises” out of fear of central agencies, even claiming that letters of complaint have reached Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s Office).
“I will not allow such compromises as long as I am in charge,” she asserted.
