The Supreme Court on Tuesday said nation can’t wait for another rape to see changes on ground stressing on female doctors’ safety in hospital in the backdrop of the rape and murder of 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The judgement was passed when a three-judge Supreme Court bench comprising CJI Chandrachud was hearing the RG Kar case.
The top court has also constituted a National Task Force for recommendations on doctors’ safety in hospitals.
The task force comprising top doctors has been asked to file an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.
It will make recommendations on safety, working conditions, well being of medical professionals and other cognate matters, said Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
CJI urges doctors to return to work at earliest.
CJI says, “we request all the doctors who are abstaining from work across the country to resume the work at the earliest. Above all the abstention from work of doctors effects those segments of the society who need medical care the most from accessing day to day services.”
“The abstaining doctors & medical professionals stand assured that their concerns are receiving the highest concern from the SC. Besides their concerns are already being portrayed before this court by a diverse range of counsels.”
SupremeCourt orders CBI shall submit its report by 22 August 2024, WB govt shall also file status report by 22 August on the progess of the investigation, acts of vandalism which took place in the hospital in the aftermath of the incident.
Supreme Court sets up National Task Force for doctors’ safety in hospitals
The Supreme Court on Tuesday constituted the National Task Force for recommendations on doctors’ safety in hospitals as the questions have been raised on the safety of female doctors in the backdrop of RG Kar rape-murder incident.
The task force comprising top doctors has been asked to file an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.
It will make recommendations on safety, working conditions, well being of medical professionals and other cognate matters, said Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
The Court criticized the publication of the victim’s name, photo, and video clips, emphasizing, “We are deeply concerned about the fact that the name, photo and video clip of the Kolkata rape victim was published all over. The law prohibits publishing victims’ names. Is this the way we provide dignity to the young doctor who has lost her life?”
The Supreme Court also questioned the Principal of the college for initially labeling the case as a suicide and noted that the parents were not allowed to view the body. It raised concerns over the delay in FIR registration, suggesting, “It appears the crime was detected in the early hours of the morning and no FIR was filed.”
