Indian Railways is set to usher in a historic transformation in overnight rail travel with the launch of the country’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on the Guwahati–Kolkata route. Designed to redefine long-distance night journeys, this modern sleeper train will significantly enhance connectivity between Northeast India and Eastern India, combining speed, comfort, and advanced technology.

The announcement was made by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a press briefing, where he confirmed that the decision came after multiple successful trial runs and completion of all necessary technical approvals. The minister also revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the service in the coming days.

According to the Railways, this new sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express is aimed at business travellers, tourists, students, and families who prefer overnight journeys without compromising on comfort. For years, passengers have demanded a faster and more modern sleeper train, and the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to meet those expectations.

High-Speed, Made-in-India Technology

Built entirely with indigenous technology, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train recently completed its final high-speed trials on the Kota–Nagda route. During testing, the train successfully achieved a top speed of 180 kmph, highlighting the growing technological capabilities of Indian Railways.

In its initial phase, the train will operate between Guwahati and Kolkata, strengthening rail connectivity with the Northeast and offering a faster alternative to existing overnight trains.

Coach Composition and Passenger Capacity

The train will consist of 16 fully air-conditioned sleeper coaches, designed for long-distance comfort. The composition includes:

11 AC Three-Tier coaches

4 AC Two-Tier coaches

1 First AC coach

With a total seating and sleeping capacity of 823 passengers, the train can accommodate:

611 passengers in AC Three-Tier

188 passengers in AC Two-Tier

24 passengers in First AC

Expected Fares and Onboard Comfort

The fares are expected to be reasonable considering the premium facilities offered. Tentative pricing, including meals, may be around:

₹2,300 for AC Three-Tier

₹3,000 for AC Two-Tier

₹3,600 for First AC

Passenger comfort has been given top priority. The train features ergonomically designed cushioned berths, automatic sliding doors, modern vestibules, advanced suspension systems, and noise-reduction technology. Spacious interiors, improved lighting, and user-friendly layouts are expected to make overnight journeys smoother and more relaxing.

Advanced Safety and Security Features

Safety remains a key focus. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will be equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system, talk-back communication facilities for emergencies, and enhanced sanitation systems using modern disinfectant technology. The driver’s cabin is also fitted with advanced control and safety mechanisms.

A New Benchmark in Indian Rail Travel

With its aerodynamic design, automatic external doors, and cutting-edge indigenous technology, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is poised to become a new symbol of pride for Indian Railways. The Guwahati–Kolkata overnight journey will no longer be just about covering distance—it will be about experiencing a smarter, faster, and more comfortable way to travel.

This launch marks a significant step toward modernising India’s long-distance rail network and improving travel experiences across regions.
