West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari once again launched a sharp political attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), reiterating his bold claim that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could win as many as 220 Assembly seats in the 2026 elections. Speaking from his own constituency of Nandigram on Saturday, Adhikari said such a result would be possible if “Sanatani voters across the state come forward in unity.”

This statement came barely 24 hours after his address at a public meeting in Chanchal, Malda, where he had questioned why BJP’s rise from three seats to 77 could not eventually lead to a tally of 200 or more. From the Malda stage, Adhikari had also predicted that after April, the Trinamool Congress would be reduced to the opposition and Mamata Banerjee would no longer remain Chief Minister.

Continued Offensive Against the State Government

Addressing supporters in Nandigram, Adhikari continued his aggressive stance against the state government, particularly targeting what he described as the misuse of the police force. He alleged that sections of the police were being used to harass opposition supporters and compared their actions to those of criminal elements.

“All names are written down, and accounts will be settled,” he warned, repeating a message he had delivered a day earlier. He claimed that certain individuals who had previously been jailed were now acting under pressure, but insisted that lawlessness would not be allowed to continue after the elections.

Reference to Regional and Cross-Border Developments

During his speech, Adhikari also referred to developments in neighbouring Bangladesh to underline his call for unity. He claimed that the decline in the Hindu population there was a warning of what could happen if communities fail to stand together. Referring to past incidents of violence, he cautioned residents of Nandigram that divisions could lead to increased insecurity.

According to him, Nandigram has a relatively smaller Hindu population, which, he said, creates pressure and fear. He urged people to set aside differences and remain united to prevent further violence and instability.

Political Counter-Moves in Nandigram

Adhikari’s remarks come at a time of increased political activity in Nandigram. Recently, Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee announced that Sebashray camps, similar to those held in Diamond Harbour, would also be organised in Nandigram.

Following that announcement, BJP supporters observed heightened political mobilisation in the area. Adhikari, however, participated in a social service initiative rather than a party-led programme. A health camp was organised in Daudpur, Nandigram, under the banner of Mahaprabhu Seva Samiti as part of the Mahaprabhu Mahotsav.

The health camp, organised by a group associated with National Commission for Women member Archana Majumdar, provided medical consultations, free medicines, and food distribution. Organisers clarified that the programme was not meant as a counter to Trinamool’s initiatives and said similar camps had been held for several years.

Political Messaging Ahead of 2026

With the 2026 Assembly elections drawing closer, Adhikari’s speeches reflect BJP’s attempt to consolidate its support base in rural and semi-urban Bengal, especially in politically sensitive areas like Nandigram. His repeated seat projections and sharp criticism of the ruling party indicate that the political temperature in the state is steadily rising.

As both BJP and TMC intensify outreach efforts, Nandigram once again appears to be emerging as a key battleground in West Bengal’s evolving political landscape.
