The first cabinet meeting of West Bengal’s new BJP government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari sent a strong political and administrative message across the state on Monday. In a packed briefing after the meeting, the Chief Minister laid out what he described as the blueprint for a “new Bengal” — one driven by security, governance reforms, closer coordination with the Centre, and the rapid rollout of long-pending welfare schemes.
The decisions taken at Nabanna are being viewed as more than routine administrative announcements. Politically, they reflect the BJP government’s attempt to sharply distance itself from the previous Trinamool Congress regime and establish what the party calls a “double-engine governance model.”
From implementing Ayushman Bharat to fast-tracking land transfer for border fencing, the first cabinet meeting carried both symbolic and practical significance.
Tribute To BJP Workers, Promise Of Support
One of the most emotional moments of the cabinet meeting came when the new government paid tribute to 321 BJP workers who, according to the party, lost their lives in political violence over the years.
The cabinet observed respect in their memory, while the Chief Minister announced that the state government would take responsibility for the affected families.
Suvendu Adhikari said the sacrifices of party workers had played a major role in BJP’s rise to power in Bengal. He also promised justice in all pending cases linked to political killings and violence.
The announcement is politically significant because the BJP had repeatedly accused the previous administration of failing to protect opposition workers. By making this one of the first issues addressed after taking power, the government signaled that political violence will remain a central narrative of the new administration.
“Fear-Free Election” Claim By New Government
The Chief Minister also thanked the people of Bengal, the Election Commission, observers, Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police for what he termed a “fear-free and violence-free election.”
The statement appears aimed at projecting administrative stability immediately after a fiercely fought Assembly election. The BJP government additionally thanked opposition parties and candidates for participating peacefully in the democratic process.
At the same time, the government’s assertion that the election passed without deaths is likely to trigger political debate, given the history of poll-related tensions in Bengal politics.
Big Push On Border Security
Among the most significant decisions was the cabinet’s approval of the process for transferring land to the Border Security Force for fencing work along the India-Bangladesh border.
According to the Chief Minister, the process will begin immediately and must be completed within 45 days.
The BJP government linked the move to national security concerns and demographic changes in border districts. The issue of illegal infiltration has long been one of the BJP’s core political themes in Bengal, and the new administration wasted little time in making it an official governance priority.
Political observers believe the decision is designed to reinforce the BJP’s image as a party focused on national security and stricter border management.
Ayushman Bharat Finally Arrives In Bengal
In one of the biggest policy announcements of the day, the government confirmed that West Bengal has officially come under the Ayushman Bharat scheme from now on.

The Chief Minister alleged that several schemes had remained stalled under the previous government despite large-scale public demand.
According to the new administration, nearly 8.65 lakh applications under the Vishwakarma scheme were allegedly not forwarded to the Centre earlier. The government also claimed that applications linked to Ujjwala Yojana involving almost one crore women had remained pending.
These accusations are likely to intensify the political battle between the BJP and Trinamool Congress in the coming days, especially over welfare delivery and Centre-state relations.
For ordinary citizens, however, the biggest takeaway remains the expected implementation of Ayushman Bharat — a scheme that could significantly expand access to health coverage for lakhs of families across Bengal.
Immediate Implementation Of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The cabinet also decided to move ahead with the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in West Bengal.
The Chief Minister expressed surprise that the law had not yet been implemented in the state and said rules for its execution would now be framed immediately.
The government additionally alleged that IAS and IPS officers in Bengal were previously discouraged from attending Central government training programmes. The new administration has now cleared the way for officers to participate in such programmes without restrictions.
This decision reflects the BJP government’s broader attempt to align Bengal’s administrative framework more closely with the Centre.
Major Relief For Job Aspirants
In another key announcement, the cabinet approved a five-year relaxation in the upper age limit for recruitment applicants in state government jobs.
The government claimed that large-scale recruitment had effectively stalled since 2015, affecting thousands of job aspirants who crossed the eligibility age limit while waiting for vacancies and examinations.
The decision is expected to bring immediate relief to unemployed youth and candidates preparing for state government jobs.
Given Bengal’s prolonged recruitment controversies and allegations of corruption in hiring processes over the last several years, the announcement could become one of the most politically impactful decisions of the new government.
Census Work To Begin Immediately
The Chief Minister also announced that work related to the Census circular issued by the Registrar General’s Office in June 2025 would begin immediately.
Though presented briefly during the briefing, the announcement carries administrative importance because Census-related processes had seen delays in several states.

Politically, the first cabinet meeting was carefully designed to send multiple signals at once — administrative urgency, ideological alignment with the Centre, and a sharp break from the previous regime.
