Bharat Newz 24*7
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari wasted no time in sending a strong political and administrative message after assuming office. In his very first cabinet meeting at Nabanna on Monday, the BJP leader unveiled a series of major announcements that the party believes will define the opening phase of Bengal’s new “double-engine government.”
From increasing the upper age limit for government jobs by five years to formally bringing Bengal under the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme, Adhikari’s first cabinet meeting was packed with politically loaded decisions aimed at signalling both administrative change and electoral promise-keeping.
Addressing the media after the meeting, the Chief Minister struck a confident tone as he outlined the roadmap of the new BJP government.
“We have completed the first cabinet meeting. My five cabinet colleagues were present. This double-engine government will work for everyone, irrespective of political affiliation,” Adhikari said.
He added, “After a long time, the world witnessed a fear-free and peaceful election in West Bengal. I express gratitude to polling personnel, counting staff, West Bengal Police, Kolkata Police, contesting political parties and candidates.”
The remarks carried clear political undertones, especially after the fiercely fought Assembly election that ended the BJP’s long wait for power in Bengal.
Six Major Decisions in the First Cabinet Meeting
Inside Nabanna’s 14th floor, the newly sworn-in Chief Minister chaired his first full administrative review meeting with ministers Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Khudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik. Though formal departmental work has just begun, the cabinet moved quickly on a number of sensitive governance issues.
The biggest announcement came for lakhs of unemployed youth in Bengal. The government increased the upper age limit for applying to state government jobs by five years.
For years, recruitment processes in several departments had remained stalled amid legal battles and corruption allegations during the previous regime. As a result, many candidates crossed the permissible age limit without ever getting a fair opportunity to sit for examinations.
Adhikari described the decision as a corrective step.
“Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said during the campaign that no proper recruitment had taken place in Bengal after 2015. Many educated youths lost opportunities because of age. Keeping that in mind, we have increased the upper age limit for government jobs by five years,” the Chief Minister announced.
The move is already being viewed as one of the BJP government’s earliest political masterstrokes, especially among educated unemployed voters who played a significant role in the election campaign narrative.
No Welfare Scheme Will Be Shut Down
In another important announcement, the Chief Minister clarified that no existing social welfare project would be discontinued.
“All ongoing schemes will continue,” he said, while adding that strict verification would now be introduced to eliminate “illegal beneficiaries.”
According to the new government, individuals who are deceased or “non-Indian citizens” will no longer receive benefits under state-run schemes. The administration is expected to launch an extensive beneficiary audit across districts in the coming months.
The statement appeared aimed at countering Opposition allegations that BJP coming to power would result in closure of welfare schemes launched during the previous government.
BJP Government Pushes Central Schemes in Bengal
The cabinet also approved steps to actively integrate West Bengal with several flagship Central government schemes that had either remained partially implemented or politically contentious in the state over the years.
Among the schemes discussed were Ayushman Bharat, PM-Kisan Bima Yojana, PM Shri, Vishwakarma Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Ujjwala Yojana.
The Chief Minister announced that Bengal had officially joined Ayushman Bharat from Monday itself.
The move marks a major policy shift, considering the political confrontation between the Centre and the previous state government over centrally sponsored schemes.
District Magistrates have reportedly been instructed to expedite all pending applications and coordinate directly with Union ministries for implementation.
Tough Message on Corruption and Political Violence
The Chief Minister also used the occasion to sharpen the BJP government’s political positioning on corruption and post-poll violence.
“We paid tribute to 321 BJP workers who lost their lives. This government stands with their families. They want justice for the killings, and we will deliver justice,” Adhikari declared.
The statement drew immediate political attention because BJP leaders have repeatedly alleged political violence against party workers during the previous regime.
Sources present at the meeting said the Chief Minister instructed officials to begin strict monitoring of corruption-related cases involving coal smuggling, cattle smuggling, illegal sand mining and alleged irregularities in tribal welfare projects.
He reportedly told the administration that restoring public confidence in governance would be one of the government’s top priorities.
“This government does not run on individual ego. It runs on policy,” Adhikari said during the briefing.
He also invoked the ideals of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, saying the government would follow the principle of “for the people, by the people and of the people.”
Major Border Decision: Land for BSF Within 45 Days
One of the most politically significant announcements came on border security.
The Chief Minister said the Bengal government had approved the process of handing over land required for border fencing to the Border Security Force within 45 days.
“The demographic structure of Bengal has changed. On the very first day, we approved land transfer to the Union Home Ministry and BSF for border fencing,” Adhikari said.
He added that the state’s Chief Secretary and Land & Revenue Secretary had been instructed to complete the process on priority.
The BJP has consistently raised illegal infiltration and border security as major political issues in Bengal, and Monday’s announcement indicates that the new government intends to move aggressively on the matter.
Next Cabinet Meeting to Discuss DA, Women’s Safety and RG Kar
The Chief Minister confirmed that the next cabinet meeting would take place on Monday next week and would focus on several explosive administrative and political issues.
These include the RG Kar controversy, crimes against women, institutional corruption, pending Dearness Allowance (DA), Pay Commission matters and salary arrears for government employees.
With just one cabinet meeting, Suvendu Adhikari has attempted to establish the tone of his administration — aggressive, politically assertive and focused on rapid policy messaging. Whether these announcements translate into execution on the ground will now determine how Bengal’s first BJP government is judged in the weeks ahead.
